Pathogenesis of lower respiratory tract infections due to Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Legionella and viruses.

چکیده
Acute infection of the lower respiratory tract comprises bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. From a clinical point of view it may be diYcult to distinguish these disease entities and one infection may progress into another. The most common pathogens causing these infections are the primary respiratory viruses (respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza virus, adenoviruses, parainfluenza virus, and rhinovirus ), Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydia species. Legionella may cause pneumonia and non-pneumonic upper respiratory tract infection and approximately 85% of c ases are caused by L pneumophila. Long lasting sequelae such as bronchiectasis, lung fibrosis, and decreased lung function are seen after lower respiratory tract infections and it has been debated whether respiratory tract infection can cause chronic bronchial asthma. 11–13

The lower respiratory tract is vulnerable to infection by a wide variety of microorganisms, because it is one of the organ systems which communicate directly with the environments. Although viruses and fungi can cause lower respiratory tract infections, bacteria are the dominant pathogens. Among bacteria the common causes of lower respiratory tract infection is Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycopla...
متن کاملOriginal Article Clinico-pathological study of atypical pathogens in community-acquired pneumonia: a prospective study
Background Atypical respiratory pathogens such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Legionella species, and Chlamydia pneumoniae are isolated with increasing frequency from community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). This study highlights the importance of organisms responsible for CAP. Methodology: One hundred consecutive patients with clinically and radiographically diagnosed CAP were evaluated from October 200...
متن کاملChlamydia pneumoniae as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia in hospitalized patients in Berlin.
The incidence of community-acquired pneumonia due to Chlamydia pneumoniae was evaluated in a 1-year prospective study of 236 hospitalized patients with 237 manifestations of pneumonia. The microbiological diagnosis was based on results of cultures of blood and sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and results of complement fixation tests and indirect immunofluorescence of acute- and convalesce...

To evaluate the occurrence and clinical significance of respiratory virus infections in hospitalized cancer patients at National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, during anticancer treatment, we studied cases that developed episodes of lower respira...
متن کاملRESPIRATORY INFECTION Aetiological role of viral and bacterial infections in acute adult lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in primary care
Background: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) are a common reason for consulting general practitioners (GPs). In most cases the aetiology is unknown, yet most result in an antibiotic prescription. The aetiology of LRTI was investigated in a prospective controlled study. Methods: Eighty adults presenting to GPs with acute LRTI were recruited together with 49 controls over 12 months. Thro...
